Is all dry cat food bad for cats?

Q. This is what I am beginning to believe. I have looked at several sources of information for this (some right here at Yahoo Answers) and it looks like dry food is essentially unhealthy for your cat. My cat is quite possibly diabetic, and it really looks like he should not have any dry food, and that includes the dry food made specifically for diabetic cats.

Now, I have seen cats live a long time eating only dry food. But maybe they would have been even healthier and had greater longevity without it.

What do you think?
This is a very interesting and very inportant issue for cats and the people who love them. From the little research that I have done, it seems to me that there would be benefits to an all wet food diet which is very high in protein and very low in carbs. Perhaps a good clue to what cats need is found when looking at what wild cats eat (in the wild).

I can accept that maybe some cats do fine on dry food for whatever reason. But I have a hard time accepting that dry food is actually BETTER than wet food. I wonder if folks who believe this think that a diebetic cat should still eat well formulated dry food instead of all wet food?

I am in the process of getting treatment for my cat who likely has diabetes, though this has not yet been confirmed. And therefore I am looking at all info available.

Thanks for all the answers here. It is clear that there are some people here who are very knowledgable about these matters, and who truly love cats.

A. Hi
Since I have been here,I have tried preaching the evils of dry foods. It's probably me you are reading So many health problems stem from dry foods with dabetes at the top to go along with obesity crystals kidney disease ect.. Ask your vet what makes the prescription food for diabetics prescription or good for diabetics and he won't know the anser (I promise) The answer being it was the lowest carn dry food at the time it was developed but still had too many carbs vompared to many canned foods. Innova evo is now the lowest carb dry and even has a semblance of quality, I have said it before and will again. After working on a diabetes board and seeing cats with kidney disease, poancreatis and of course diabetes, I would give the worst quality canned over any dry food out there.
Here's another problem for you. Many vets aren't up to date with diabetes treatment and you can go to 20 different vets and get 20 different treatments for your cat. You need to be proactive and take control of this with the vet as your backup.
I can help you all the way through this so please whatever the vet says, start on a low dose of insulin (1 unit 2x a day at most), have the vet teach you shots and whatever else and email me so I can give you the tools to rake care of your cat.
This is published in javma about nutrtion which is the vets bible.

Is there any health professional that is aware of this new water craze?
Q. This filtered water is supposed to have an alkaline ph level of 9.5 and is beneficial to cleaning out the acid build up that we consume in our everyday diet. Any professional opinions?

A. What is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water (also known as Kangen water in Japan) literally means "return to original." Alkaline water has been shown to help restore the body to its original, healthy condition. It has an adjustable pH reading of 8.5 - 9.5, making it alkaline, which is the opposite of acidic This machine can change the waer from from mildly alkaline to highly alkaline.

pH is a very impt balance in your body.( normal blood pH is 7.35-7.46) However, it's frequently ignored. For people having a very low pH means that the body is highly acidic.Thi prediposes them to cancer Dabetes and obesity. The pH level of ionized water will vary with the pH of your source, i.e. your tap water. In addition, if you wish to make the water more alkaline( higher than 7.46 or more acid,( pH lesss than 7.35 simply slow down the flow of water.

All Alkaline (Ionizers) Water Machines are ACTUALLY Water Electrolysis Machines producing alkaline water. This enables you to accustom yourself gradually to higher levels of alkaline drinking water (e.g. pH9.5 to 10) there are several types types of ionizers: Melody and Jupiter.

How is the water made?
The process for making the water is very simple. The machine simply connects to your faucet, you turn on the power, then the faucet and the magic begins. The regular tap water is initially purified by the internal filter and then ionized via electrolysis. This results in the water being separated into two types: alkaline (hydrogen-rich) and acidic (oxygen-rich).

The uses of alkaline water are many, but the single greatest benefit remains improved intestinal and colon health.

Use mild acid 5.5 pH water as a skin toner to give your skin a healthy, radiant shine. After consuming alcohol, tea;coffee and eating acidic foods such as meat, egg yolks white bread; drinking alkaline water will help balance the pH. It's also good for cooking.;cut flowers and plants; mixing colors for painters. Alkaline water can give you that youthful look. A diet rich in vegetables is considered alkaline decreasing the risk of cancer. Eating a red meat rich diet can make it acidic which can lead to cancer. .

This is not a scam. This is a fact.

How do cinnamon supplements help your body use blood sugar?
Q.

A. I've never heard how it works, but the diabetic in my family swears that it does. He just uses a heaping spoonful of plain ground cinnamon from the grocery store on his cereal every morning.

I found something about the study that was done at http://diabetes.about.com/od/whatsonthehorizon/qt/cinnamon.htm -- please note that cinnamon does NOT show any benefits for people with Type 1 dabetes, only with Type 2. The article doesn't really explain HOW the cinnamon works, just that it does.

When to switch a 4 week old kitten from formula, and to what?
Q. This is my first time owning a kitten, I have always had dogs, so I am a bit lost. My kitten is a month old, when I got her she had already been weaned off the mother. I was given instructions to mix wet food with formula and water 4 times a day. I would like to know when I should take her off of the formula & if I should continue with wet food after she is off the formula or should I switch to dry food (mixing with water to soften it up), or a combination of wet and dry food. Thank you in advance for your advice.

~Clueless

A. Gradually lessen the amount of formula that your are mixing with the wet food until the ktten is eating just plain wet food. Introduce dry kibble matbe primarily as a "treat." I am a firm beleiver in not feeding cats solely on dry food because:
1. It simply is not natural - you'll not find a cat or lion or tiger in the wild chasing a herd of kibbles or biscuits. Felines are strict carnivores and they need proteins that come from animal meat - not corn.
2. Cats are notoriously lazy drinkers of water and feeding them solely on dry food virtually assures a dehydrated cat most of the time.
3. Lack of water not only dehydrates the cat, it also concentrates the cats urine so that crystals can form in the kidney or in the bladder eventually causing urinary track obstructions, bladder infections and renal failure (as the cat gets older).
4. Dry cat food is almost 50% carbohydrates becuase of the amount of grains like corn and wheat etc that must be used as binders to make dry kibble. This almost assures you that your cat will become fat and even obese over a period of time. Obese cats are in danger of developing dabetes, heart disease, arthirtis, just to name a few.

These are just a few objections I have against dry cat food as a cat's mainstay diet. But giving your cat 1/4 cup of good quality dry kibble a day should be OK. Next to a raw food diet, a wet food diet closely approximates what cats eat in the wild and what cat's digestive systems are designed for. They were'nt designed to digest large amounts of grain products (corn, wheat, rice, barley, oats, soy, etc). They were designed to digest and metabolize animal meat - not corn flakes or cereal.
