With all the conflicting info, is drinking coffee good or bad?

Q. With all the conflicting info, is drinking coffee beneficial or harmful to one's health?

A. Recent studies, show, without a doubt, drinking coffee in moderate amounts, has many benefits. Coffee contains antioxidants, called, "Polyphenols". Studies show that coffee drinkers are lowering their risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer, and more. A coffee called Kopi Luwak, is the most expensive coffee in the world, at $75 per 1/4 pound. It is eaten by a Palm Civet, and then excreted. *It is also supposed to be the 'best' tasting coffee, as well!

What are your chances of going blind from diabetes ?
Q. Im just wondering what are your chances of going blind from diabetes im worried about it.
It runs big in my family and my friend said she will test my blood tomorrow to see if i have diabetes also im wondering if she test my blood on here meter will she be able to tell me if i have it or not?

A. First of all, one finger stick is not enough info to get diagnosed on. You need to see a doctor for proper testing.

The chances of going blind from diabetic retinopathy are very high if you don't take care of yourself and control your blood sugars. Even diabetics who have advanced retinopathy have a 90% chance of retaining vision if they get treatment before the retina becomes severely damaged.

any advice on how to start a diabetes support group in the community?
Q. Small community of 40K people, nearest big city is peoria, 200K, anyway, we only have support groups in peoria for diabetes sufferers. I would like to start a support group for my city and the surrounding community east of the illinois river. any advice would b greatly appreciated.

A. First , think of a name for your group. Then get two or three diabetic friends to brainstorm. Come up with rules , how you want to either have meetings like AA or more casual. One cool way to attract people is to have a "Eatin' Meetin'" once a month. Have some special diabetic foods for the guests.
Decide what days you would have meetings.

Have officers, President , treasurer and secretary. For the first 6 months to a year , you be president . That's so you can create a great meeting venue. Then have a vote to elect new officiers.
Be flexible , but you will run into a few that will try to dominate. So you must be the Boss for a time.

Join a diabetes forum , that way you will have great topics to discuss.(diabetesdaily.com) is a good one to start. Also is it just for Type 2 diabetics or for all. That's your decision.
And finally , place a small ad in the local newspaper. Run it for a couple of weeks. Also have you friend tell their doctors about the support group. This could get bigger than you think. The more the merrier.
Here is a great guideline for diabetics . It took me years to get it down pat. I am type 2 .

Also the websites mentioned are great resources.
There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels :

1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list.
2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph This is a great site for info
3) Meds. Metformin to start. Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. They may kill you. Bone fractures, heart problems and what diabetics really don't need is that they change Bone Stem Cells to Fat Cells. Also never ever take Onglyza or Januvia . They can can inhibit the bodys immune system and let cancer spread.
4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

Good luck

What are some good recipes and snacks for ppl with diabetes?
Q. I only get diabetes while pregnant I don't know what that's called. Please help. Thanks in advance.

A. You get gestational diabetes. :)

I'm the creator of DiabeticMommy.com, a site for women with all types of diabetes, but we reach out especially to women with gestational diabetes. Check out the forum!

When I was pregnant, I didn't really seek out "diabetic" recipes. I still don't. I counted carbs, made it so much easier. For meals I had 30 g of carbs (or two servings) and for snacks I had 15 grams (or one serving). Of course, the amount of carbs you can have will be tailored to you, and a dietitian should tell you how many you can have.

Anyway, when I did it that way I didn't have to seek out special recipes, I could eat whatever, just had to keep an eye on the carbs.

And I also tried to have a serving of protein with each serving of carb.

So snacks could be a piece of bread with a protein (half a sandwich with lunchmeat, egg salad, grilled chicken, etc) and sandwich veggies or a salad with a serving of croutons and some chicken. I could also have tortilla wraps with some protein inside (a piece of chicken breast, cheese, slices of ham) with some greens or mustard and a pickle. Another favorite snack would be crackers and cheese.

As far as big meals I could have some bigger versions of those above, for instance a taco would be a serving of carb and protein. I could have two or I could fit in a little rice and beans...again you may be allowed a lot more carbs than I was. :)

Look at the nutrition info on labels and recipes. Some sites like http://www.Recipezaar.com give the nutrition label, plus they have diabetes recipes.

If you eat at restaurants or prepared foods, check out http://www.calorieking.com/ for carb counts.

Good luck!!
