Does anyone know good vegetarian guidelines for people with diabetes Type 2?

Q. I just found out that I have diabetes Type 2. I know I have to stay away from jams, jellies, etc. What are the best protein items I can eat to help me stay healthy? Any other vegetarian/diabetes info would be helpful. I want to try to go veggie for this!

A. Here's some info:

I heard some company in USA is giving free nutrition supplements for people with type 2 diabetes. Any info?

A. That's news to me, but this might be a possibility:

Actually, supplements, like gymnema sylvestre, cinnamon, fenugreek, and banaba leaf, are cheap. Especially when compared to more medication.

How do you avoid becoming diabetic?
Q. My grandmother is diabetic and she's in terrible shape. She has swollen red legs and kidney problems. We have to check her blood sugar after breakfast and dinner, and keep it under control with insulin before every meal.

I don't want to become like that, so I want to know what kind of things I can do to avoid future health problems like diabetes.

Additional info: I checked my own blood sugar so I could learn how to do it for my grandma and it was at 84. I don't know if that is good or bad.

A. There is nothing you can do to avoid Type 1 diabetes; it is an autoimmune disease.

To try to prevent Type 2, exercise 30 minutes most days of the week, and keep your weight in a normal range for your height. Unhealthy cholesterol can raise your risk for Type 2 also. I have included a link about prevention of Type 2 diabetes below, and also a link so you can take a risk assessment test for Type 2. My sources are all from the American Diabetes Association.

Also, diabetics are allowed to have some sugar, and eating sugar does not cause diabetes.

You are smart to be concerned; as you can see, it is a devastating disease with many complications. (I was type 1 until I had a kidney/pancreas transplant).

I need a way to loose weight fast. Ive dieted and worked out but im still over weight. anyone know how i can?
Q. ive dieted and exercised and nothing seems to work. is there something i can take to help me loose it. im 24yrs old 375+ lbs and afraid i will end up with diabetes. any info will help alot.

A. The number one rule is NOT to go on any fad diets or take any diet pills. Those can both screw with your metabolism and are usually found to be dangerous. Also, when you go off the fad diet or stop taking the pills, you usually gain the weight back plus more.
When you say you diet and exercise, what is your plan? To effectively lose weight, you need to work out at least 5 days a week for 30 minutes to an hour. Preferably an hour. Going walking is a great way to burn calories. Lifting weights is also great for burning fat and toning up. Bicycling is another great form of exercise that is easier on the knees than running or jogging. Swimming also does amazing things for the body. Experiment and see what you prefer and what works for you. Just try to get in around an hour a day five days a week.
For your diet, cut all sugar. Go cold turkey. No more sugar if you are truly concerned with your weight and getting diabetes. Also cut out milk and milk products. These make you gain weight like crazy. Cheese and milk have high fat contents, and are generally bad for you. Get your calcium from other sources like fortified fruit juices or from fortified rice or soy milk and from leafy green vegetables.
Eat lots of vegetables. Raw and fresh ones are best. Don't smother them in fatty dressings or sauces. Just wash and eat. Any kind of fresh fruit is also a plus too.
Eat breakfast! This one of the main things that studies show that skinny people do and fat people don't. Eggs, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and whole wheat (NOT white bread) toast are all great options for a healthy breakfast. Avoid breakfast foods that are full of fat and empty calories like bagels, pop tarts, donuts, sausage, bacon, and biscuits and gravy.
Cut red meats from your diet (like beef and pork) and replace them with chicken and fish. These are lower in fat and usually lower in calories too. Cut out all fried foods and stop going to fast food restaurants altogether.
Drink LOTS of water. At least ten to twelve glasses a day. This will help flush out all the crap floating around in your system, give you more energy, and make you feel full quicker. Also, thirst can often be mistaken for hunger. Drinking lots of water can ensure that you don't have hunger cravings as often, which will help you stick to a diet plan.
Get plenty of sleep! Getting enough sleep with make you feel more energized throughout the day and you will be more inclined to exercise. Getting enough sleep will also make you less tempted to reach for the convenience foods on the grocery store shelf and at home and you will have energy left to actually cook a healthy and well-balanced meal rather than making a box dinner which usually contains outrageous amounts of fat and empty carbs and calories.
Using this method of losing weight will take a long time. Doing it the healthy way always does. If you want or need help, I would recommend joining Weight Watchers. I have a family member and a close friend that both went through the program successfully, lost tons of weight AND kept it off. Weight Watchers basically tells you the same things I've just told you and offers other advice and support. And who knows, you might make some new friends and meet some cool new people! ( : Taking the weight off the healthy way is hard and it will take a long time. To lose 200+ pounds will probably take over a year. But you CAN do it. Just believe in yourself and be patient.
