Can too much natural sugar cause diabetes?

Q. Ok. As far as I know, too much white sugar or the white crystal-like powder can cause diabetes. Can natural sugar (like natural sugar from sweet fruits) cause diabetes too?

A. Diabetes isn't caused by sugar intake at all. It isn't caused by diet (except in as much as being significantly overweight is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes). There are no particular foods that cause or contribute to it.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the body inexplicably attacks itself

Type 2 diabetes is hereditary - you won't get it unless you have diabetic genes. But diabetic genes on their own are not enough to cause diabetes - there have to be other risk factors involved. Someone without the genes can lie in bed all day eating pork pies, chocolate and mayonnaise sandwiches and candyfloss knocked back with gin and cola ; they won't be healthy, they'll almost certainly be overweight - but they won't develop diabetes. So bad choice of ancestors is the first step to getting type2 diabetes.

However diabetic genes are not enough to cause diabetes on their own. You are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes if, as well as having the necessary genes
*you are aged between 40 and 75
or
*you are of Asian or African-Carribean origin
or
*you are significantly overweight
or
*you are a woman who has had a baby weighing more than 4kg

Though these are the main risk factors, there are some other things that can trigger type 2 diabetes, eg steroid medicines. In my case it is thought possible that the steroids used in chemotherapy triggered my type2 diabetes, or pushed me 'over the edge' into diabetes .

Type 2 diabetes is almost always controlled by diet and other lifestyle changes like increased exercise. But it isn't caused by diet

Can fresh sugar cane juice be harmful or cause diabetes?
Q. I am planning for a master cleanse diet with fresh sugar cane juice as i am in INDIA. I do not get maple syrup grade b as easily as fresh sugar cane juice. If i drink 6-8 glasses of fresh sugar cane juice daily for 14 days, is it harmful? Will it cause diabetes due to excess intake of Sugar? Pl suggest and clarify..

A. You'd be better eating a sensible diet, I don't like the sound of drinking so much sugar but that wouldn't cause diabetes per se.

However if you are obese and have a long history of poor diet and lack of exercise you would be at increased risk of type II diabetes.

I eat a banana everyday, sometimes 3 times a day. Will this cause diabetes because of the sugar?

A. Consuming sugar will not cause diabetes. Remain active, watch your weight, and you can eat whatever you want with no worries.

does anyone know of any herbs or vitamin that may cause diabetes?
Q. I just wanted to knowif there were any herbs that a diabetic should stay away from or if there are any herbs that may cause diabetes? Please give some good advice, for take a lot of supplements and drink herbal teas.

A. I don't know of any vitamins. However, herbs like MARIJUANA can make you hungry and if you eat a lot of sugary things then you might get diabetes.

What causes diabetes when your pregnant?

Q. I'm worried because i've been craving a lot of sweets lately. I'm not overweight or anything. I don't know if that even has anything to do with it? I don't really exercise but I don't lay around I work and I clean the house and stuff while I'm home. So what exactly causes diabetes

A. it has nothing to do with being overweight, I became huge when I was pregnant (gained 60 lbs) and I was the biggest in the childbirth classroom-- but I was one of the very few who did not have diabetes while pregnant.

Anyways I am curious to know too! I am planning baby #2 now and would like to know

What do people eat that can cause Diabetes other than candy?
Q. I mean things that we might not know can actully cause diabetes. I know that hamburgers is one but what other things can cause a person to become a diabetic?

Thanks

A. I agree, foods you eat do not cause diabetes.

Hell, even being overweight doesn't always cause Type 2. Seriously, look at all the fat people in the world that DON'T have Type 2, and tell me that being overweight causes it. Not true!

If you're genetically predisposed to getting it, you will get it much more quickly if you're overweight.

A. When you're pregnant, hormonal changes can make your cells less responsive to insulin. For most pregnant women, this isn't a problem: When the body needs additional insulin, the pancreas secretes more of it. But if your pancreas can't keep up with the increased insulin demand during pregnancy, your blood glucose levels rise too high, resulting in gestational diabetes.

Craving or eating sweets doesn't cause diabetes when pregnant.

How do food borne chemical toxins cause diabetes?
Q. I'm doing a paper on genetic susceptibility and need to further research it deeper. How is it that food borne chemical toxins cause diabetes? Like what specifically do they do to your body? And how does being exposed as a very young infant to cow's milk cause diabetes as well? I KNOW that these aren't proven causes and just hypothesis. Thanks!
:]

A. I think that you need to either gather credible evidence that these things might be true, or find another hypothesis for your paper. Right now, the only people I've heard suggesting such ideas are total nutjobs, and your teacher will give you a bad grade because you used unsuitable sources, and were not able to back up your claims.

If wine is made from fruit, why would the fructose cause diabetes?
Q. If wine is made from fruit, why would the fructose cause diabetes?

A. Fructose does not cause diabetes. If you have diabetes, it can cause high blood sugar. Diabetes is your body's inability to handle sugars properly.
