please tell me what kinds of vegetables and meat should I eat if I am suffering from diabetis?

Q. my leg really has began to hurt me, and my feet hurt , I think it is coming from the diabetis. Please help me if you can

A. The ideal solution is to see a dietician, but since I don't know if your insurance will cover one for you, I will tell you what my practices are that I have recieved from my dietician. But these are just general guidelines.

Remember, every diabetic is different in as far as how many calories they should consume eat day to maintain or lessen(but not increase) their body weight.

I am 5'3" and 118 lbs., so your needs may be lower or higher than mine to maintain healthy weight:

High sugar vegetables include corn, sweet potatoes, peas.
As far as the other high-sugar vegetables (and the above is not an exhaustive list - there are more) , usually 1/2 ro 1/3 cup is appropriate per serving. A lot of times it's not only the type of food we eat, but an extravagant amount per serving that gets diabetics into trouble.

Rice (especially white) is often included in some diabetic meal plans. However, I stay away from rice altogether, because it spikes the blood sugar wildly.
But, it goes to reason that you can have a few more fresh cooked green beans than you can of corn.

Marbled beef contains a lot of fat so avoid it. Meats are mostly protein, not starchy, and any dietician will tell you a correct "portion" is the size of a pack of cards. No meats are off limits, (skinned chicken, veal, pork, lean beef)except don't make a habit of lamb, because it is also a very fatty meat. And stay away from sausages, because they often have added sugar. For any processed meat, you will have to read the package to find out if there is added sugar.

The reason I'm mentioning fat content also is because heart disease is the #1 killer of diabetics, so stay away from fatty meats and try to prepare them yourself with spices instead of gravies. (When I do buy ground beef, I get the 93 percent lean type and cook it to death until juices run clear & then discard any grease) .

I buy Burger King garden salad often, and prepare an oil and vinegar dressing instead of putting on the dressing that comes with it. I usually eat this in the evening. Or cut up a fresh green pepper or munch on fresh radishes.

Pretty much any other vegetable can be worked into a diabetic meal. Broccoli contains a lot of vitamin K (which is used in the process of clotting blood), so if you are older or on blood thinners, it's a no-no. And fish is great for you (no carbs, just protein!) if you like it. I can only stomach fresh broiled Salmon and Cod. But it's been "prescribed", so I do prepare it weekly.

Since your leg hurts, it could be neuropathy, but DEFINITELY get it checked by a doctor. It could be a more serious circulatory problem. You don't want to "guess" about what might be happening when you have diabetes.

how long does it take for a Glucagon emergency kit to take affect once given?
Q. My 10yr old has Diabetis and just had his second seizure in as many months.I had to use the kit twice now and I am unsure of the time it takes for it to work?

A. The onset of Glucagon, given into the muscle, about 1 minute. However, it also depends on the amount of glucose that are present in the cells. Obviously it is used in the setting of Hypoglycemia. The problem is that glucagon is not usually used to stop seizure. Benzodiazepines are needed. you can get a prescrition from his pediatrician for Diastat which is given rectally to stop seizures.

The other thing is that if he continually ahving these episodes due to hypoglycemia, it is important that the medication are adjusted properly to prevent hypoglycemia, and that he needs to eat smaller meals and more often to prevent hypoglycemia.

What are some symptoms of intentional food poisoning?
Q. My wife and i suspect someone of poisoning her mothers food. she has a life insurance policy and her sister is the beneficiary, well she has diabetis and her kidneys are failing. And she has been getting bloody stools (sorry for the mental picture) . But i was wanting to know if there are any signs of food poisoning that we should look for?

A. Do NOT get a blood test. To detect a case of food poisoning, you should do a STOOL culture.

As far as food poisonings are concerned, bloody stools are common with Campylobacter, Shigella and E. coli O157:H7 infection.

These three bacteria are easy to detect with a STOOL CULTURE. Also, please note if there are any fevers, vomiting and nausea.

In general, you should see a doctor if your stools are bloody. It could signal infection, hemmorhoids or colon problems (including cancer!). But lord knows, renal failure and diabetes can cause similar problems as well.

How do they measure your cholesterial in your blood stream?
Q. What is cholesteral? Isn't that just another word for blood sugar?
Can't diabetis be aquired through alcholism and improper eating?

A. No, cholesterol is very different from sugar, being a fatty waxy alcohol. It requires a different laboratory measurement. Cholesterol is necessary for the body, being a normal component of the cell membrane, but it can also build up in the bloodstream as a result of high-fat diets. This is likely to cause disease of the heart and arteries.

One form of diabetes can be acquired through improper eating (taking in too many calories, i.e. overeating), but alcoholism does not automatically lead on to diabetes.
