Is it possible to control type1diabetes with once daily injection of NPH insulin without use of regular insuln

Q. Many type 1 diabetes around the world only get use of once daily injection NPH insulin without regular one..In some countries many diabetes and even their doctors have not seen yet newer insulin such as rapida, aspart, lispro and glargine. How is possible to control type 1 diabets in a good maner with once daily NPH injecton insulin?

A. It is NOT possible. With few exceptions, that is why most Type 1 diabetics in poor countries where fast acting insulin is not available die of horrible complications in a fairly short period of time. In some countries like Japan, where Type 1 diabetes is considered a stigma and a "curse" by some families, the child/person is often given very little insulin and/or perhaps only long acting insulin. It is not uncommon in these cases for the child to live less than 5 years. Type 1 children in Africa often die soon after diagnosis due to lack of proper insulin to treat it (DKA needs fast acting insulin to bring the person out a the coma in time to save their life).

The problem is sustained high blood sugars, but also potentially severe lows from the unpredictability and long action of NPH. This is made worse if the person is not able to test their blood sugar regularil or eat regular meals.

So you can keep a person alive (but not well) on NPH and a strict low carb diet. But by no means will they have "good control" or a good quality of life. Or likely a long life.

What is the best suggestion to stop eating sweets?
Q. I never was in to sweet stuff until 3, 4 months ago. I always were watching my diet and food intakes but since afew months ago i can't hesistate sweets my body starts shaking for it. i don't have diabets and also noticed when i'm near my menstrual cycle i have that cravings alot. What should i do? i hate to tell this to my doctor i know he's gonna start to advice me. I beg u to give me the best suggestion not advising. Thanx

A. Around the time of your period, most women crave chocolate (so it's completely normal)...due to the body's craving for magnesium. It;s ok to have a little. Just don't keep alot in the house, and you won't be tempted to eat it. Also try low fat frozen yogurt or FiberOne Bars...they are sweet, chocolately..and pack in 9 grams of fiber, so they're good for you too.

They say chewing sugarless gum helps calm the craving for sweets too...doesn't hurt to try it.
