what is the connection between type II diabetes and overheating?

Q. Id like to know what the connection is between type II diabetes and someone overheating. Ive looked all over the internet and all i find is info on diabetic neuropathy. Is there somewhere that explains scientifically/biologically what process goes on and how this happens? i'd really like to know !! if anyone has a website or SOMETHING i can be directed to....

A. Generally speaking, people with type II diabetes (esp when uncontrolled) have an increased blood glucose level. This not only causes water in the individual to be drawn out of their tissues, but it also causes an increase in water loss through increased urine production. Because water is the key to thermoregulation, when water is lost, so is our ability to manage our own temperature. This dehydration, probably along with a decrease in efficient circulation, is what causes overheating in many people with diabetes.

Which of the following statements about type II diabetes is false?
Q. Which of the following statements about type II diabetes is false?

Type II diabetes can be managed by monitoring blood glucose levels.
Type II diabetes can be managed with drugs that increase cellular responsiveness to insulin.
Type II diabetes can be managed by prescribed diets
Type II diabetes can be managed by insulin injections.

A. Type II diabetes can be managed by monitoring glucose levels - yes, monitoring helps management.
Type II diabetes can be managed with drugs that increase cellular responsiveness to insulin - some of the oral meds used perform that function.
Type II diabetes can be managed by prescribed diets - diet is an important part of diabetes management.
Type II diabetes can be managed by insulin injections - Many type II diabetics use insulin injections to help manage their disease. Here's some more information on that:
Insulin
Iantidiabetic drugs fail (i.e., the clinical benefit stops), insulin therapy may be necessary usually in addition to oral medication therapy to maintain normal or near normal glucose levels.[49][50]

Typical total daily dosage of insulin is 0.6 U/kg.[51] But, of course, best timing and indeed total amounts depend on diet (composition, amount, and timing) as well the degree of insulin resistance. More complicated estimations to guide initial dosage of insulin are:[52]

For men, [(fasting plasma glucose [mmol/liter]5)x2] x (weight [kg]÷(14.3xheight [m])height [m])
For women, [(fasting plasma glucose [mmol/liter]5)x2] x (weight [kg]÷(13.2xheight [m])height [m])
The initial insulin regimen are often chosen based on the patient's blood glucose profile.[53] Initially, adding nightly insulin to patients failing oral medications may be best.[54] Nightly insulin combines better with metformin than with sulfonylureas.[51] The initial dose of nightly insulin (measured in IU/d) should be equal to the fasting blood glucose level (measured in mmol/L). If the fasting glucose is reported in mg/dl, multiply by 0.05551 to convert to mmol/L.[55]

When nightly insulin is insufficient, choices include:

Premixed insulin with a fixed ratio of short and intermediate acting insulin; this tends to be more effective than long acting insulin, but is associated with increased hypoglycemia.[56][57].[58] Initial total daily dosage of biphasic insulin can be 10 units if the fasting plasma glucose values are less than 180 mg/dl or 12 units when the fasting plasma glucose is above 180 mg/dl".[57] A guide to titrating fixed ratio insulin is available.[53]
Long acting insulins such as insulin glargine and insulin detemir. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by the Cochrane Collaboration found "only a minor clinical benefit of treatment with long-acting insulin analogues for patients with diabetes mellitus type 2".[59] More recently, a randomized controlled trial found that although long acting insulins were less effective, they were associated with reduced hypoglycemic episodes.[56]
Insulin Pump therapy in Type 2 diabetes is gradually becoming popular. In an original published study, in addition to reduction of blood sugars, there is evidence of profound benefits in resistant neuropathic pain and also improvements in sexual performance

so really, none of the statements are false

To prevent Type II diabetes, is it more important to avoid sugar and carbs, or to avoid fat?
Q. I understand that it is important to avoid both sugar/carbs and fat, to prevent insulin resistance (which then leads to Type II diabetes,) but which is more important?

A. What will make the most difference in preventing you from becoming full-blown diabetic is to lose weight. If you are obese, do what you need to do to get down into the overweight category. If you are overweight, do what you need to do to get into the normal category. That's not to say there aren't healthy-weight people that still have insulin resistance, but that helps most people.

As for food intake, fat doesn't affect your blood glucose because it has no carb. Carbs impact your blood glucose and need to be moderated. Doesn't matter if it's sugar, fruit, potatoes, bread, or milk - carbs are carbs. Keeping your carb intake at less than 30-35g per meal will not overload your body, and the insulin you produce should be able to metabolize that. Focus on lean meats and veggies as the bulk of your food. 30 minutes of exercise daily also makes a big difference, even if you divide it into two 15-minute brisk walks, because that increase in your metabolism continues throughout the day.

How dangerous is drinking and type II diabetes?
Q. My husband is a heavy drinker and was just diagnosed with type II diabetes. How dangerous is this? He is on Metformin currently, by the way.

I know he is choosing to do something very harmful to his body and I wish he would wise up...but I'd like to know the risks of this.

Thank you in advance.

A. Alcohol with diabetes is tricky. The alcohol can cause serious blood sugar lows if he does not eat adequately and limit his intake of alcohol. And the alcohol itself has 7 calories a gram, so some drinks are very high in calories, resulting in weight gain, which aggravates insulin resistance in Type II. That said, you are not the diabetes police. He is probably in denial to some extent. A diagnosis of diabetes in a previously healthy, or at least relatively healthy individual feels like a huge betrayal by your body. For your part, be supportive. Feed him according to his meal plan. Learn non-food, non alcohol rewards for celebrations, goals achieved, etc. Talk to a certified diabetic educator and/or a dietitian for a meal plan that allows for his lifestyle, likes, dislikes, and caloric needs. Exercise with him-even a walk after dinner is great. I recommend the Dlife.com website for recipes, information on current research and an online open forum for questions. Good Luck to both of you.

How important is it that a diabetic eat on time?
Q. My brother, sister-in-law & nephew have a diabetic cat. When I take care of my nephew I also take care of their cat. Sometimes when my nephew and I are out we get back 15 min to 30 min late for for the cat's 1:00 feeding. Last time I actually got back an hour late.

Is this bothering the cat or not? It's hard to tell with him, since he just lays around all day, and sleeps.

Would he be feeling worse?

The diabetes has goten much better and he doesn't need to be given insulin anymore. It's controled by diet.

A. It depends on how the diabetes is treated.

It is less important for diet controlled diabetics and type 2 diabetics who do not take insulin or sulfonurea oral meds to eat on time. This is because sulfonurea drugs actively cause the pancreas to make more insulin which lowers the blood sugar and must be counterbalanced by eating, which raises the blood sugar. If a diabetic takes an insulin injection that is supposed to lower the sugar after a meal, and they don't eat the meal, then their sugar goes too low.

This is especially a problem with the longer acting insulins. If an insulin lasts 12 or 24 hours and the person taking it does not stay on schedule, then there could be problems.

One advantage of a diabetic who has an insulin pump is that they have no long acting insulin in their body, and the insulin they do have acts so quickly that they can actually take it AFTER they eat if they had to. That way they know exactly how much insulin to take and it works so quickly they can be much more flexible with their schedule.

To answer your question...I am not a vet, but I imagine an hour late would not bother the cat any more than it would bother any other cat.

What's the difference between diabetic and regular shoes?
Q. Is there any difference between a diabetic show and a regular shoe besides the diabetic insert that goes into the shoe?

A. Diabetic Shoes

Shoes for diabetic patients are made of special protective inserts and soft shoe materials to accommodate for conditions such as neuropathy (numb feet), poor circulation, and foot deformities (bunions, hammertoes, etc.). The shoes decrease the chance of foot sores (ulcers) which can be caused by friction and pressure. This may lead to infection, gangrene, or even amputation.

The foot and ankle surgeon may measure the diabetic patient's foot and have the shoes made at a specialty laboratory. In some cases he/she will give the patient a prescription to have the shoes custom-made.

What are some safe and healthy fruits/veggies diabetic hamsters can eat?
Q. I have a female hamster that I belive to be diabetic (I am testing her tomorrow). My current feed I give her is too high in sugar, and since it is Thanksgiving most stores are closed and I can't buy her another type of food. So I was thinking just for today, I could give her fruits/veggies. She is also dehydrated (I am working on that as well and she is getting better), so anything (fruits and veggie wise) that would help would be appreciated. So I would just like a list of fruits and veggies safe for diabetic hamsters and that will help with her dehydration. Thank you!

A. The best is the Bunny or the Oxbow, if your hamster was diabetic would have really serious problems, a hamster is really delicate. The best vegetables to give to the hamster are lettuce, radicchio, the coast, the chicory, fennel and celery. While the fruit should be given once a week in small amounts. εïз

I would like to know if anyone else takes this product or knows a good doseage to help combate the diabetes. Some info can be found on the website www.legacyforlife.net/michaeljohns

What causes people with Type 1 diabetes to get bad headaches and migraines?
Q. My little brother has type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed with it at 12 months old and he sometimes get bad migraines. What causes migraines and bad headaches when you have type 1 diabetes?

He is 17 years old and is a big part of me. If something ever happened to him, damn I don't know what I'd do.
I need some responses here guys.
Thank Tralee, but he already has an insulin pump as do most people with type 1.

A. I have had type 1 since I was 16 yrs old and have had migraines as well . It is because your sugar goes too high and puts excess pressure on your brain cells causing exspansion of them and that is what causes the migraines . I got this info from my dr and also I got a prescription for sumatriptan and it does help but makes you very drowsy and you cannot do anything after that .

How long does diabetes take to develop?
Q. I had a fasting glucose test in late 2006 which returned normal. I went back to the doctor this week and he recommended I retest every 1.5 years to monitor that until I bring certain risk factors under control. Is it possible to go from normal to full blown diabetes in a year?

A. Type two diabetes is generally pretty slow to progress. A lot depends on your diet and lifestyle. For me, it took years after the symptoms presented for my doctor to pronounce me, "diabetic".

Yes, it's possible, but not likely. If it's a concern, just learn all you can about preventing it by visiting my diabetes info page:
http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html

BTW, It also has taken years for me to reverse the process to where I no longer have to take medication.

How can we prevent diabetes type 2? What would be the best diet to prevent?
Q. I currently am writing an article about diabetes. I have been searching and reading many evidence-based articles. However, I'd like to hear your own opinion on diabetes type 2.

A. As you probably know heredity, plays a big roll.

For diet, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and poultry, Stay away from the white stuff, white bread, potato's, sugar, white rice etc. Eat as little processed food as possible . All carbs are not created equal a white potato and a sweet potato have the same carbs but metabolize differently, check out the Glycemic Index on foods it will give you more info. Exercise, weight is a big part of it also. If it runs in your family, I don't know if you can prevent it, but maybe you can delay it. The closer to nature the food is the better. Read labels and don't go by net carbs unless your on Adkins. STAY AWAY FROM JUNK FOOD! I hope this helps.

How Do u know?!?

Q. how do u know if u have Dieabeties or cancer

Im just VERY parinoid

A. Diabetes is characterized by some of the following: Blood sugars outside of 80 - 110, dry mouth, increased thirst, shakiness, blurred vision, altered mental status, speech impairments, lethargy, tires easily, excessive urination/ especially at night.
Cancer symptoms vary with the type of cancers.
Cancer is a disease process in which unhealthy cancerous cells/ cells that have not function other than reproducing, replace healthy cells. So the cancer cell will not do the function that you need, such as an unhealthy cancerous lung cell will not exchange oxygen, so you get short of breath, When your short of breath, you will cough, this is your bodies attempt to get more air.
Skin cancer: moles that change color/ appearance/ edges change/ irregular edges/ moles that sink are very dangerous and need to be checked out immediately, as they may be metastasizing. Skin changes, get thick or thin, the elastic in the skin alters.
Lung cancer: dry, non productive cough, hacking cough. shortness of breath. tires easily.

What to do about my friend? PLEASE ANSWER!?
Q. So we've Been Friends since 4th Grade. She used to be so nice, we live 4 houses away from each other and used to hang out all the time but she acts different now. She's desperate for guys attention and needs to tell us (our group of friends) how pretty she is constaintly! She will also make up stories about guys checking her out! She average looking, thin straight brown hair with brown eyes. She always brags about her amazing body! She is in good shape she runs but she'll say how she's a B cup when she's not! I mean I'm an A and It's not like she needs to prove anything!;) anyway I could deal with that but she will get really nasty sometimes. I'm a good looking person (not trying to brag at all I'm just happy with the way I look) and when I get attention from guys she calls me a slut! We where at at dance and some guy hit my butt and I yelled at him and she got all mad, calling me a slut and saying I was flirting. My other friend is also pretty but she's a little insucure about her weight (she has type 1 dieabeties so I know that makes it harder to control your weight) but she's not fat at all, she a bit heavyer but in a big boned type of way she's a size 6 so deffinatly not fat! And this girl will calls her fat! I told her I was annoyed about how she was being really rude and acting insucure and gave her examples of times she acted like that and she ignored my text for 3 weeks, now texting me today saying how this "fight" is stupid. I'm not fighting just done with her, the problem is our parents are friend and I see her a lot in school. I Am fine being friendly with her and nothing more but she will not leave it at that. She just gets really clingy if you leave her. I feel kinda bad because we have been best friends for so long and I was her only close friend. What should I do?
Thanks so much!
To the second comment I do tell her she's pretty. she'll say stuff like "I feel so ugly" And I'll say "your crazy! Your really pretty" I Find her unactractive now BECAUSE she needs to be completed, so annoying! Just be happy with yourself

A. You need to let her go, she will find another friend. You deserve better than someone who just wants you around to say she pretty or to not be lonely.

What does it mean to be 'glucose intolerant' and what is the best place to find reference material about it?

Q. I have heard the term 'Glucose intolerant' but I have no idea what it mean, exactly. Where can I find reference material that explains it in detail. What sort of foods can a person eat or drink? Does this mean a person has something like sugar diabetes and do they have to take meds? What effect does this have on a person's body if they have too much glucose?

A. It means that you can't have sugar. It is like lactose intolerant which means you can't have milk. A good resource reference could be an encyclopedia. The person has to eat or drink foods that have very low sugar. It might mean they have sugar diabetes depending on how bad it is. You might have to take medication if it is very bad. Glucose can be good, it is like natural sugar like sugar in apples.

Food or meal ideas with very low sodium, very low sugar, and low calories?
Q. There's an older relative of mine who has been told they need to eat foods with very low sodium (due to kidneys) and very low sugar (diabetes). These are per doctor's instructions, and they were given a generic list of food recommendations. However, I just wanted to throw this question out there to see if there are any creative ideas or possibly recipes that people would know of. I can tell that this family member is getting rather bored with their diet.

A. There are lots of creative ideas, limited only by your imagination. I will make a couple of recommendations. First and foremost, keep regular appointments with the doctor. Here are a couple to start with:

breakfast - make oatmeal - REAL oatmeal. you will find it is sodium free. I make mine with skim milk, but you may want to cook with water as it has no sugar and mike does. use 3/4 cup oats and 1.5 cups liquid. This is an inexpensive filling meal with many benefits. Sweet and low adds to the flavor and I put 1/2 tsp of cinnamon on mine. There is some research that claims cinnamon (and other spices to some extent) have positive effects on cholesterol and glucose levels. Check for yourself and don't over do it, as you CAN consume too much cinnamon.

For lunch, try a turkey sandwich on toasted light bread. Look around for lower sodium products. Add romaine lettuce and use mustard instead of mayo. Add some carrot or celery styx and a sugar free jello and you have another winner.

Dinner is the easiest. I like grilled chicken breast - if you look in the spice isle you can find a lot of sodium free spice mixes, or just cook with pepper and the juice of a fresh lemon. Add some grilled, roasted, or steamed veges and serve with a portion of brown rice.

For a snack, try an apple (cored and sliced) banana, orange in season or air popped popcorn with a tall cold glass of seltzer water and lemon.

These ideas lower most people's food bills, and usually their weight, which helps with the other problems.

Good Luck to you family and bless you for being a helper!

How do i avoid sugar addiction on frutarian diet?
Q. i have heard that you can get sugar diabetes like symptoms. Is it really that bad i thought Fruit was the perfect food!

I was thinking doing apples and bananas and pineapples and melons because they are all over but i'm beginning to think of doing tomatoes and avocados as the main fruits and then the really sweet stuff will come in as treats.

My main question is can i become diabetic if i stuck with the common sweet fruits?

A. Since your question deals with addiction, you should check out this site, it has lots of helpful info that might help with your question:

http://www.recoveryforums.org

This site has a lot of great resources for people dealing with addiction or recovery, and those who know people who are dealing with it. It is worth a look in my opinion.

Does anyone know what a good average blood sugar level is?
Q. I passed out at work today and think it was because of my blood sugar! Diabetes runs in my family and I have a checker I just don't know what the average is!

A. The range of normal blood glucose is 80 to 120. The average normal non-diabetic person will have a BG of between 85 to 95 two hours after a meal. As a diabetic that's the number to shoot for. It's hard as hell to get numbers matching normal non-diabetics without conscienously making an effort. I have dropped my BG's from the high 400's to about 110 over the course of 18 months. I have a meal plan for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Of course, I stray but I try to keep it to a minimum, just the same. My averages are 100 for the morning, 110 - 119 for noon and dinner time is about 95-115. My A1c went from 14 down to 6.2 over that time. If I can do it, anyone can. It just takes effort.

How do you know when you have Sugar Diabetes?

Q. My Friend has dizzy spells and she has been to the doctor but he has not test her for sugar diabetes he has giving her X Ray on her ear.

A. What is sugar diabetes???? There are only 2 types, type 1 and type 2. If she only shows dizziness of course they aren't going to test her because weight loss, thirst, frequent urination are more common symptoms.

What happens if someone with bad diabetes refuses to amputate a dead foot?
Q. If someone that has sugar diabetes does not amputate a bad foot... Can it kill them?
They are saying his heart rate is only 20% and is too weak to preform an amputation.

A. I am afraid they are all correct. There may be the possibility of doing the amputation under an epidural injection (like for having a baby). This is a lot less stress on the heart than a general anesthetic but isn't free of risks either. It is also very stressful for the patient as they can hear the saws etc.

Does too much sugar cause diabetes or is that just an old wives tale?
Q. I've been eating a lot of sugar lately. Diabetes doesn't run in my family but I've heard too much sugar can cause it. Is this true?

A. Absolutely an old wives's tale! Too much of anything is not good for you! Moderation in all things is always your best course.

Diabetes is much more complicated than just too much sugar. Type II (adult onset) diabetes is caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin to process the sugar in your body; however, all of the starch you consume is converted to a form of sugar. A large contributing factor to acquiring Type II diabetes is consuming too many calories.

Type II diabetes *does* seem to run in families. My mother was diagnosed with diabetes in her 70s, I'm not sure when my older sister was diagnosed. I was diagnosed around age 65 and my younger sister (two years older) was apparently diagnosed in her 60s. My brother, now 67 has not yet been diagnosed with diabetes.

Why are people with diabetes always thirsty?
Q. I had a quiz in my nutrition class today, and this question came up. We were supposed to give 4 answers. I could only think of one real reason (to lessen blood sugar as it is thick when hyperglycemic).
I added other points about muscle contractions and ease of digestion, but they have nothing to do with blood sugar/diabetes, really, so I'm not sure what else I should have put!
What else should I have added?

A. Hi,

The body always has a system, and a backup system.

When the body works normally, the pancreas keeps the sugar levels under control by making the correct amount of insulin, and changes any sugar spikes into body fats.

When that system does not work, then the kidneys start to remove sugars and send them to the bladder. This causes you to pee, and to be thirsty too.

So it is the second defense for the body to control super high blood sugar levels.

What you really need to do is study your book, and find out what it says about being a diabetic, and being thirsty. You can usually look up such things in the back, sort of an index for things like this.

Good Luck!
