With all the conflicting info, is drinking coffee good or bad?

Q. With all the conflicting info, is drinking coffee beneficial or harmful to one's health?

A. Recent studies, show, without a doubt, drinking coffee in moderate amounts, has many benefits. Coffee contains antioxidants, called, "Polyphenols". Studies show that coffee drinkers are lowering their risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer, and more. A coffee called Kopi Luwak, is the most expensive coffee in the world, at $75 per 1/4 pound. It is eaten by a Palm Civet, and then excreted. *It is also supposed to be the 'best' tasting coffee, as well!

What are your chances of going blind from diabetes ?
Q. Im just wondering what are your chances of going blind from diabetes im worried about it.
It runs big in my family and my friend said she will test my blood tomorrow to see if i have diabetes also im wondering if she test my blood on here meter will she be able to tell me if i have it or not?

A. First of all, one finger stick is not enough info to get diagnosed on. You need to see a doctor for proper testing.

The chances of going blind from diabetic retinopathy are very high if you don't take care of yourself and control your blood sugars. Even diabetics who have advanced retinopathy have a 90% chance of retaining vision if they get treatment before the retina becomes severely damaged.

any advice on how to start a diabetes support group in the community?
Q. Small community of 40K people, nearest big city is peoria, 200K, anyway, we only have support groups in peoria for diabetes sufferers. I would like to start a support group for my city and the surrounding community east of the illinois river. any advice would b greatly appreciated.

A. First , think of a name for your group. Then get two or three diabetic friends to brainstorm. Come up with rules , how you want to either have meetings like AA or more casual. One cool way to attract people is to have a "Eatin' Meetin'" once a month. Have some special diabetic foods for the guests.
Decide what days you would have meetings.

Have officers, President , treasurer and secretary. For the first 6 months to a year , you be president . That's so you can create a great meeting venue. Then have a vote to elect new officiers.
Be flexible , but you will run into a few that will try to dominate. So you must be the Boss for a time.

Join a diabetes forum , that way you will have great topics to discuss.(diabetesdaily.com) is a good one to start. Also is it just for Type 2 diabetics or for all. That's your decision.
And finally , place a small ad in the local newspaper. Run it for a couple of weeks. Also have you friend tell their doctors about the support group. This could get bigger than you think. The more the merrier.
Here is a great guideline for diabetics . It took me years to get it down pat. I am type 2 .

Also the websites mentioned are great resources.
There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels :

1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list.
2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph This is a great site for info
3) Meds. Metformin to start. Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. They may kill you. Bone fractures, heart problems and what diabetics really don't need is that they change Bone Stem Cells to Fat Cells. Also never ever take Onglyza or Januvia . They can can inhibit the bodys immune system and let cancer spread.
4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

Good luck

What are some good recipes and snacks for ppl with diabetes?
Q. I only get diabetes while pregnant I don't know what that's called. Please help. Thanks in advance.

A. You get gestational diabetes. :)

I'm the creator of DiabeticMommy.com, a site for women with all types of diabetes, but we reach out especially to women with gestational diabetes. Check out the forum!

When I was pregnant, I didn't really seek out "diabetic" recipes. I still don't. I counted carbs, made it so much easier. For meals I had 30 g of carbs (or two servings) and for snacks I had 15 grams (or one serving). Of course, the amount of carbs you can have will be tailored to you, and a dietitian should tell you how many you can have.

Anyway, when I did it that way I didn't have to seek out special recipes, I could eat whatever, just had to keep an eye on the carbs.

And I also tried to have a serving of protein with each serving of carb.

So snacks could be a piece of bread with a protein (half a sandwich with lunchmeat, egg salad, grilled chicken, etc) and sandwich veggies or a salad with a serving of croutons and some chicken. I could also have tortilla wraps with some protein inside (a piece of chicken breast, cheese, slices of ham) with some greens or mustard and a pickle. Another favorite snack would be crackers and cheese.

As far as big meals I could have some bigger versions of those above, for instance a taco would be a serving of carb and protein. I could have two or I could fit in a little rice and beans...again you may be allowed a lot more carbs than I was. :)

Look at the nutrition info on labels and recipes. Some sites like http://www.Recipezaar.com give the nutrition label, plus they have diabetes recipes.

If you eat at restaurants or prepared foods, check out http://www.calorieking.com/ for carb counts.

Good luck!!

What activity could I do to entertain and inform my listeners about diabetes?

Q. I am doing a presentation on diabetes and I need to keep my audience entertained and informed.
What activity could I do to make a presentation about diabetes fun. I already have all the information that I need but it just seems boring especially for a bunch of 17-19 year olds. Can anyone help me? My presentation revolves around teen and adult diabetes if that helps.

A. Well..
I have type one diabetes and anyone who knows anyone about the disease (as I'm sure you do) knows it's not something 'fun'.
But of course, you don't want to bore your audience to death.

I cannot really think of any way to make if fun, but don't just throw facts at the audience. Use examples, tell stories, ect. I know what I'm much more interested in a more personal presentation than someone naming stupid statistics.

Wish I could be more help.
Feel free to message me if you need any info.

~Lindsey (:

How can we prevent diabetes type 2? What would be the best diet to prevent?

Q. I currently am writing an article about diabetes. I have been searching and reading many evidence-based articles. However, I'd like to hear your own opinion on diabetes type 2.

A. As you probably know heredity, plays a big roll.

For diet, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and poultry, Stay away from the white stuff, white bread, potato's, sugar, white rice etc. Eat as little processed food as possible . All carbs are not created equal a white potato and a sweet potato have the same carbs but metabolize differently, check out the Glycemic Index on foods it will give you more info. Exercise, weight is a big part of it also. If it runs in your family, I don't know if you can prevent it, but maybe you can delay it. The closer to nature the food is the better. Read labels and don't go by net carbs unless your on Adkins. STAY AWAY FROM JUNK FOOD! I hope this helps.

Is a Raw Vegan Diet healthful for diabetes and high blood pressure?

Q. Is a raw vegan diet healthful over a long period of time, especially with diabetes and high blood pressure? I am trying to switch to a raw vegan diet, but my dietitian insists it is not healthful. Has anybody here tried it long-term, or know anybody who has? I'm wanting to lose a lot of weight, and I've been making a lot of salads, with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, green bell peppers, celery, onions, carrots ... and then I pour on a bunch of vinegar and lemon juice. It's tasty, nutritious, and very low-calorie. It seems to be working for me, but my dietitian isn't happy. And I didn't even tell you what my primary care physician thinks about my decision to quit all my diabetes and blood pressure medications and just rely on a raw vegan diet instead of the meds ... except that I'm going to have to find another primary care physician.

A. I have heard of people curing diabetes and high blood pressure with a raw food diet. I am not raw myself (though I have played with recipes, and incorporated some things like green smoothies into my daily life), but I have met several long-term raw foodists who have overcome illnesses including diabetes, allergies, eczema, and even one who beat cancer - and all are very healthy now and off of all medications. One book I would highly suggest is 'Eat to Live' by Joel Fuhrman - it is primarily raw food, and addresses the issues of diabetes and high blood pressure. He also has articles about this and many other topics on his website, and he is available for consultations if you want him to create a plan for you to get off your medications. (but I wouldn't just go cold turkey on your medications - your body will need time to adjust and gradually wean yourself off of them). check out these links:
http://www.drfuhrman.com/default.aspx (click on the 'reverse disease' link for info on diabetes)

http://www.rawfamily.com/

http://creativehealthinstitute.com/ - the creative health institute has a fairly inexpensive two-week residential program that teaches you all aspects of how to live and eat raw. I know people who have done this program and had great experiences with it.

good luck!
