how much sugar a day could contribute to Diabetes II?

Q. I really want to know the amount of sugar (consumed daily) that someone needs to get Type II Diabetes. I know the recommended is no more than 30g a day, but say a person goes to 60g a day, would he get diabetes?

A. Unless someone knows something I don't, there's not really a good answer to this question. Since diabetes is not caused by eating sugar but rather a variety of factors, including heredity, how would one answer how much is too much sugar per day? As far as I know there are no studies out there that definitively answer this either...

Good luck! (:

my husband was just diagnosed with diabetes II, he is in complete denial. How do I get him with the program?
Q. He is supposed to control his diet but he still eating the same old crap and is also a big meal skipper. Rather than knowing he is predisposed to diabetes because of his familiy history and being african american, he assumes its just something he can't prevent.

A. You really can't. This is a journey he needs to take, and most of us have taken it. About the best thing you could do is check with your doc's office or local hospital to keep an eye out for diabetes education classes. Sign both of you up and attend together. Sometimes just knowing he's not alone and hearing others' ideas of how they live healthier can boost his motivation. There is also a really good 30-minute TV show called DLife on CNBC on Sunday afternoons that you could record and watch together.

How much junk food can I eat?
Q. My grandpa has diabetes II and I'm trying to prevent getting it myself. But I really "Need" some processed foods. So do you think it's okay to for example eat 1 scoop ice cream, 1 slice of apple pie and a muffin in a week. That's all, no sodas or anything. Only vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, whole wheat bread, water and other unprocessed foods for the rest of the week. Is this safe?

A. The main thing is to keep a reasonably balanced diet and consider how your grandparent developed diabetes, whether it was from being overweight or not.

Do any of you have other afflications that you have to deal with in addition to you diabetes?
Q. I have diabetes type II, but I also have several other disorders that I have to deal with on a daily basis. Including a seizure disorder, anxiety disorder, emphasema, severe vertigo, and insomnia. With each of these disorders and my diabetes I have to take about 35 pills a day to get through to the next.

A. I have many other medical challenges .
You may be the first person i have ever hear of who takes more medication than I do .
I am not far beyond you.

The most significant difference between diabetes type I and diabetes type II is:?
Q. A diabetes type I requires treatment with insulin whereas diabetes type II never requires insulin injections.

B diabetes type I is caused by insufficient insulin whereas diabetes type II is caused by insufficient glucagon.

C diabetes type I occurs mostly in children whereas diabetes type II does not affect children.

D diabetes type I is caused by insufficient insulin production whereas diabetes type II is caused by decreased peripheral utilization of glucose.

A. Aren't B & D the same??? My answer is B & D. I would like to correct you on 1 point though -

C. Type II DOES affect children. My daughter and a friend's daughter have it. They have it under control with diet.

How big is the chance I will get diabetes?

Q. I'm a 14 year old guy, 6' and 142 lbs. My grandfather has diabetes II so I'm very afraid I will get it too. But if I never drink soda, never eat candy, and only processed foods like chocolate and a a small piece of apple pie in the weekends (so only fruit, vegetables, maccaroni, fish, nuts, whole grain bread, water and tea on the weekdays) how big is my chance I will get Diabetes?

A. Diabetes runs in families.

However, at 14 I would think you would have years before you have to worry about it. And maybe not even then if you continue your healthy ways.

I have Diabetes II. Can you suggest a healthy snack to eat?
Q. I just was diagnosed with diabetes type II. I do not drink nor smoke, but boy did I do sugar... Now I have to learn to eat without eating sugar. Any suggestions regarding snacks?

A. My husband and I are both type 2 diabetics. This is what our dietitian suggested we eat: low fat, low carbohydrate snacks with 22 grams of total carbohydrates or less. Be sure to read your labels on packages for serving size and total carbohydrates.

Example: 3 - Murray sugar free chocolate chip with pecans cookies. Total carbohydrates: 18grams, which = 1 carb. Murray has some good choices such as: sugar free vanilla waffer cookies, which 4 cookies has a total of 20 grams = 1carb. You can find these and a lot more at Wal -Mart in the cookie section.

We also can have sugar free Jello with a dab of light Cool Whip.

Blue Bunny has a wonderful sugar free ice cream called Banana Split, we can have 1/2 cup. It taste sooo good! You won't believe it is sugar free, but it is! The only place I have found this ice cream is at Wal - Mart.

Our dietitian allows us to have a small amount of things with low sugar as long as we stay within our carbohydrate limit. My husband gets 5 carb choices at a meal and I get 4 at a meal.

Example: 11/2 low fat graham crackers is about 19 grams = 1 carb. or 6 vanilla waffers = 1 carb. You can also find these at Wal - Mart.

Fruit is always a good choice for a snack. We like canned peaches without sugar, 12 grams = 1 carb. sprinkled with 1 or 2 packs of Splenda and add a dab of Light Cool Whip... Good!

I could tell you more, but you really need to get your doctor to send you to a registered diatitian. A dietitian can explain to you all about carbohydrates. What you should and should not eat. How many calories you need per meal including snacks.
Every diabetic is different, and has different needs that is why it is so important to get as much education on diabetes and how to eat what is right for your particular needs.

To make your own sugar free snacks you might want to visit these websites: Splenda.com, Jell-o.com.

For more information on diabetes here are some good websites: www.ada.org, www.webmd.com, prevention.com, about.com

I really hope this helps you. Good luck with your diabetes.

I need to get rid of a Pot Belly that I got when I drank beer 10 years ago, but since quit drinking any alcoh?
Q. I am 52 and I am male, who stopped drinking beer and don't do any drugs anymore since 1984, however I have the potbelly of a huge guy that looks like he consumes gallons of beer a day. My legs are not big and my arms are normal. I noticed a bit of fat around my neck. I think my liver is not so good so it converts food to fat. I'll admit to drinking 2 liters of diet Pepsi a day but quit that too. Now all I drink is Diet green tea, but a lot of it. I have diabetes II and high blood pressure. I can't wait to start teaching this next semseter but I am not the role model that I should be by showing up 60 pounds overweight. The kids will say it is ok to be fat and eat like pigs at the drive thu's. I need to lose the fat and it gets hot as hell around here, so running is not feasable. I would like to walk but I'd have to lose weight before I rode a bike so the tires woudn't blow out. I really do not eat that much. I ate more before. It is really a problem to find t-shirts that fit.

A. Homeopathic Treatment for Excessive Fat and Weight :-
PHYTOLACCA BERRY's Mother Tincture is perhaps the safest and sure fire way of loosing excessive fat around abdomen. With Phytolacca Berry once you loose the excessive fat and weight you don't get it back because you body takes care of itself after that and keeps you from gathering up excessive fat. It is prescribed after having a baby too, to get the tummy to loose its flab and to make it flatter and tighter. And after loosing weight with this you don't get flabby it tightens up the flab and skin along with helping your body to shed the excessive accumulation of fat around the girth
The dosage is 15 to 20 drops of the tincture in half a cup of hot water thrice a day half hour before or after meals.
Avoid Chocolates, Coffee, Mints, Red Meat and Carbonated and Alcoholic drinks while taking Homeopathic Medicines. You have to take it for at least 30 to 45 days after that you start to feel the results.
To the best of my knowledge its the safest and the most sure fire way of loosing fat and weight and keeping it of for keeps. Excellent remedy for Obese people who cant seem to shed weight despite trying.
Homeopathic Remedies can be found at all Major Herbal Stores or could be bought on line, In most of the world Homeopathic remedies are quite cheap and easy to find and they do not need a prescription.
Take care and God Bless !

Did you know that if you have diabetes and eat or drink sweets it can put you to sleep?
Q. I have diabetes II and ate some cookies and lost almost all of today.
I won't be able to sleep for some time now.
Did you know about this?
Do you fall asleep after eating sugar?
Have you got diabetes and don't know it?
This should give you a clue if you eat sugar and then sleep your life away.
Actually that was yesterday I didn't wake up till today.

A. My grandfather has diabetes, It's gotten really tough for him, but he's pulled through. I did not know that happens to diabetics. If I drink to much root beer I go crazy and then I get really really tired. But it only happens with root beer...

What are the "normal", (non-diabetic) blood sugar ranges, before and after meals?
Q. I have diabetes II, and want to use diet and exercise to improve my health. My doctor doesn't spend much time answering my questions, and I can't get a straight answer about the normal ranges for blood sugar for non-diabetics, which I want to compare to my own, to see how far off I am (rather than just pulling out pills or insulin to normalize my blood sugar levels. If I find a particular food or activity makes my condition worse, I want to modify my activity level, or food choices. I want to take control of my condition, not just be lazy and take pills.
I am 62, and have diabetes II. I am not significantly overweight (only 20 lbs). I want to take control of my own health, and use diet and exercise to improve my health. I know how my blood sugar reacts when I eat certain foods, but would like to know what the ranges are for "normal", non diabetics, (before meals, 2 hours after, etc.) so that I can have a goal to work towards. I can't seem to get a straight answer on this. My doctor said to use insulin "temporarily", then later said that most people have to stay on it once they start. I know other diabetics whose blood sugar levels are much worse (double what mine are), who don't use insulin, (though significantly overweight, and inactive) and while I want to improve my condition, I don't want to do anything stupid, and make my condition worse.

If I have the "normal" range as a goal, and can see how certain foods or activities effect me, I can attempt to modify my food choices and activity level to improve my health.

A. I just received this information that you are asking for from my nutritionist last week.

People without Diabetes
Fasting - 70-100
2 hours after meal - 70-120

People with Diabetes: Ideal
Fasting - 80-120
2 hours after meal - 100-140

People with Diabetes: Target
Fasting - 80-140
2 hours after meal - 100-160

I am a T2, diagnoised 2 months ago. My doctor set these goals for me.

Fasting - less than 105
2 hours after meals - less than 130

How can I preclude life insurance blacklisting with Diabetes II?
Q. I have a case of Type II Diabetes and I have found that qualification for life insurance requires a blood test. Based on blood testing, companies will charge much more if a person has Type II Diabetes. I was wondering if there is some way to fool the company to make them believe that I am normal. Perhaps I could work out just before the test?

A. My wife has worked for several life insurance companies and worked for one for 23 years. She's now in surety bonds but keeps in touch with many people in the industry.

First off, if you lie on the application, you void the coverage. A life insurance application will ask about Diabetes. You won't fool anyone but yourself. Second, the blood test won't show Diabetes if you are in control on your blood glucose. Third, for many companies, you authorize them to obtain your medical records and many of those are held by your health insurance company and they are very willing to share authorized requests for data, most are interrelated in one way or another, owned by same parent company, using the same re-insurance company, etc. so its beneficial for all insurance companies to keep claims down.

There are some insurance companies that realize that in-control Diabetics live a healthier life than most other people and are beginning to price their policies accordingly and at least bringing them down to close to the same costs as a non-diabetic person. Shop around and find one of those companies. Get copies of your last few years A1C scores and show them that you are in control and therefore a good risk. This way, you've been up-front and honest and they can't void your coverage for insurance fraud.
